County Executive Restores Service to Germantown Ride On Bus Lines

After considering community input, County Executive Ike Leggett has decided to restore most weekday and Saturday service on three Ride On routes that had been proposed for service cuts. The cuts had been proposed in August to help close the significant budget shortfall facing the County in FY16.

In Germantown the restored service includes Routes 83 and 98. Route 98, which runs from the Kingsview Park and Ride area and runs throughout Germantown to the Transit Center on Airpark Drive on weekdays, with stops at Clopper Miller Elementary during peak hours. The proposed cuts would have eliminated the 98 Route on weekends which include stops at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

Council Executive Leggett also restored Saturday and Sunday service on the Route 83, which runs from the Milestone Shopping Center to the office park near Dorsey Mill Road through the Waters Landing neighborhood to the Germantown Transit Center, with a stop at the Germantown MARC train station.

Leggett also restored the Route 42 weekday, Saturday and Sunday service, which operates from the White Flint Mall to Montgomery Mall.

Each year, Ride On creates a performance indicator for each route and ranks them accordingly. The performance indicator compares the resources allocated to each route with the number of average daily riders. The routes which were proposed for elimination were among the lowest performing in Ride On’s system.

“Without these weekday and Saturday routes, many younger residents told us they would lack transportation to work, while many seniors expressed concern about getting to their doctor and buying groceries,” said Leggett. “I’m glad we were able to capture public input, restore limited routes and still achieve FY16 savings.”

Members of the public provided written comments and spoke at two public forums regarding proposed service cuts on Routes 83, 98, and 42. Forums were held on September 17 in Germantown and on September 24 in Rockville.
