MoCo Unemployment Rate is Lowest in Maryland



The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation and the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics have reported that Montgomery County's unemployment rate in August 2015 was 3.8 percent, down from 4.6 percent last August.

Almost 10,000 more County residents had jobs compared to the year before.

“These latest figures are good news for the County,” said County Executive Ike Leggett, who has given priority to a Six-Point Economic Plan designed to make the County even more competitive in business attraction and job growth. “We need to build on these gains to provide for the good jobs of the future and grow investment and the County tax base.”

The statewide unemployment rate for Maryland was 5.1 percent, or about 161,807 people out of work, according to the Maryland DLLR. Montgomery had the lowest number of unemployed. According to the Maryland DLLR, there were 20,970 people unemployed in Montgomery County, out of a labor force of 548,353.

In comparison, Somerset County, which has the highest unemployment rate at 7.3, with 749 unemployed out of a labor force of 10,210.

Howard County’s unemployment rate was at 4.0 percent, with 7,002 unemployed of a work force of 175,124 people. Montgomery County’s other neighbors are also lagging just a bit, Prince George’s County has an August 2015 unemployment rate of 5.1 percent, with 24,959 unemployed, of a workforce of 484,908. Frederick County’s employment rate is at 4.3 percent, with 5,635 unemployed, of a workforce of 129,442 people, according the Maryland DLLR.
