Washington Spirit Head Coach and General Manager Steps Down

The Washington Spirit announced today that Mark Parsons has stepped down as the team’s Head Coach and General Manager.

“On behalf of the Spirit organization, we’d like to thank Mark for his tremendous efforts to build a championship team from the pros to the academy,” said Ashlee Comber, Vice President of Operations. “It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside Mark. He is an amazing human-being, and we wish him and his family all the best.”

In a note he posted to Twitter, Parsons said, "Spirit Fam, it has been an honor to work with you all over the last two-and-half years and I'm going to miss you all." The note went on to thank Washington Spirit owner Bill Lynch, Ashlee Comber and the staff at the Spirit. He also thanked the interns, volunteers, academy, the Maryland SoccerPlex and "most of all the players for coming together and pushing the club to new heights every single day."

He addressed the Spirit fans saying, "Spirit Family and Spirit Squadron your support and passion is inspiring and always pushed us to be the best. I know the club will continue incredible progress led by an amazing group of players. I hope am able share my next step in a few weeks," said Parsons.

Parsons was named Head Coach mid-season in 2013 after serving as the Washington Spirit Reserves Head Coach. He finished with an overall record of 20-24-13 and led the Spirit to the playoffs in 2014 and 2015.
