Parks Department Holds Ribbon-Cutting for New Field at Ridge Road Park

It was once just a field; now it is a football field. The Montgomery County Parks Department, along with County Councilmember Craig Rice and Planning Board Chairman Casey Anderson were on hand to officially open the new football field in Ridge Road Recreational Park in Germantown last weekend.

According to Melissa Chotiner, media relations manager with Montgomery County Parks, the new field, which is known as athletic field #5, at Ridge Road Recreational Park was previously an unprogrammed open space. “We made it into an athletic field to meet the increasing demand in the area for high quality fields,” she said.

The new football field was necessary because the Germantown Football Association, which had been practicing on field behind the Germantown Community Center near Kingsview Middle School. However, that field was in poor shape and not very conducive for football, according to Councilmember Rice.

“They had been playing on field in South Germantown Park,” said Rice, “but the area where they were playing has been turned into baseball diamonds and they had no place else to play.”

“This was important to the community,” said Rice. “When you look at Seneca Valley and Northwest these are two great football teams and a lot of those players come out of the Germantown Football Association. So, we found some additional space that we had at Ridge Road that we were able to convert into a football field.”

“We have a natural turf field that is absolutely gorgeous and it will be great for the community,” said Rice.

The new field is Bermuda Grass according to Chotiner, which provides a more uniform surface than other grass that is traditionally used on ball fields. “It is also a tighter weave so there will be less opportunity for bare spots and ruts,” she said.
