Spirit Clinch Playoff Spot, After Draw With FCKC
The Washington Spirit played the FCKC Blues to 0-0 a draw in front of 2,492 fans in Kansas City Thursday night. The draw gives the Spirit one point which clinched a post-season spot for the second straight season.
In a tight game with every pass, shot, and possession challenged, contested, and pressured. In the 28th minute, forward Crystal Dunn forced an FCKC turnover in midfield and worked the ball to a couple yards outside the 18-yard box before rifling off a long range shot wide of the goal. Just a few minutes later the Spirit continued their offensive surge as several players exchanged passes in the attacking third before FCKC centerback Becky Sauerbrunn stepped in the clear the ball out of bounds.
Again it was Dunn, the NWSL’s leading goal-scorer, who nearly broke the stalemate in the 58th minute as she skirted several Blues defenders on the perimeter of the box and slammed her shot directly into the waiting arms of goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.
It was Dunn again who managed to create one more dangerous opportunity during stoppage time, eluding several defenders before releasing her shot from the top of the box. But it was no to be. The game would end in a 0-0 draw after four minutes of stoppage time.
The Spirit earned the one point needed to secure a spot in the playoffs. The Spirit continue their three game road series on Sunday as they play Portland Thorns FC in front of a raucous sold-out crowd at Providence Park at 9:30 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.
The Spirit have clinched a playoff berth and are currently in fourth place in the NWSL with 29 points. The Seattle Reign sit atop the league with 39 points, followed by FCKC with 29 and the Chicago Red Stars also with 29 points.
