Transformer Fire Knocks Out Power in Parts of Germantown

August 24, 2015

A transformer fire on a utility pole has knocked out power to the southwestern section of Germantown and Boyds area.

Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer reports that fire units were called to a transformer/utility pole fire in the 14100 block of Clopper Road near the intersection with Richter Farm Road at about 11:30 am Monday morning.

PEPCO spokesman Bill Yingling confirmed that roughly 1,900 customers in the Germantown area are without power. “Crews are responding to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. Crews are working to restore power and will then begin to investigate what led to the outage,” said Yingling.

The outage affects the Manchester Farm area of Germantown which is north of Clopper Road, as well as customers west of Schaffer Road from Clopper Road to South Germantown Park.

Clopper Road was closed for about an hour this morning as fire units and utility crews worked to extinguish the fire. MCFRS reported that there were no injuries.

Power should be restored to the area by 3:00 pm, according to PEPCO’s Outage map.

On Sunday night, First Energy Corp./Potomac Edison reported that 1,500 customers in the Waters Landing area of Germantown lost power for about two hours, from roughly 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm. There was no word on the cause of that outage.
