Local Team Advances Out of the Group Stage in Cal Ripken World Series
The Germantown-based Upper Montgomery Athletic Club or UMAC, 10-and-under baseball team have advanced out of the group stage at Cal Ripken League World Series being played in Jonesboro, Ark., this week.
The UMAC team, which is the MidAtlantic Regional representative at the tournament, went 3-1 in group play beating the team from Southwest region, New England and the Mid-West Plains region, before dropping a game to the host team from Jonesboro on Tuesday.
Saturday’s 7-3 victory over the southwest regional champs from Ranger, Tex. The UMAC boys took the lead in the first inning after Luke Pearre got on base with a single. After a passed ball moved him into scoring position, a single by Tommy Roldan drove in the run.
In the bottom-half of the first, the team from Texas tied the game on a sacrifice single and a run-scoring double.
The Montgomery County boys, coached by Jody Pearre, who is making his second run at a national title with a UMAC team, would take the lead for good in the third inning on a two-run home run by Noah Ashker. The UMAC team would add two more runs in the top of the sixth, as Aiden Butler’s double scored Van Rosenbaum. Ryan Woolery would later score on an error to extend the UMAC All-Stars lead to 7-3.
UMAC got a strong performance from pitcher Tommy Roldan who recorded seven strikeouts in four complete innings. While Ryan Woolery closed game by striking out the side to end the game.
On Sunday, the UMAC All-Stars jumped out to an early lead to beat the New England Regional Champs, 12-4. Nine runs in the first three innings allowed UMAC to put the team Brookfield, Conn. away early.
A two-run double by Oliver Martin in the first inning and five-run second inning set the UMAC boys up with a 7-0 lead early in the game. Martin would end the game with five RBIs, on three hits. New England couldn't get anything going as long as Ryan Woolery was on the mound. He held New England hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out two in the victory.
UMAC continued its run through the group play on Monday with an 11-1 victory over the Mid-West Plains Regional Champions from Bemidji, Minn. UMAC began its half of the first inning with three-straight singles. With one out in the inning, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Champions scored on a wild pitch, a single and a walk to take a 3-1 lead. Oliver Martin would come up big again as he racked up two RBIs on two hits. He singled in the first inning and doubled in the second inning. Martin also allowed just one hit while pitching two innings.
On Tuesday, UMAC lost their last game in group competition 9-7 to the host team from Jonesboro, Ark. The Mid-Atlantic champions got seven runs on eight hits but stranded eight runners on base in the game.
Luke Pearre got the scoring started in the first inning when he scored from second thanks to a single to right field by Tommy Roldan. Roldan would get another RBI in the bottom of the third when a line-drive single to center would score Luke Boyd, who had hit a triple to right field. Roldan would later score from third on an RBI by Martin.
