Germantown Hosts College Tennis Showcase
The TennisPlex in South Germantown Park hosted nearly fifty top junior tennis players over the weekend as they gathered for the 2nd Annual College Tennis Showcase.
The Showcase which was held Saturday, July 11, brought together junior players and college coaches for a series of workshops on college recruiting, including a coaches panel, an alumni panel, and presentation on college recruiting compliance from Whitney Ames, Compliance Coordinator at UMBC.
A number of players from the Germantown area, and many from Montgomery County joined players from as far as Stone Mountain, GA, Forest Hills, PA, and Cambridge, MA to meet and play in front coaches from colleges including, Harvard University, U.S. Naval Academy, Penn State, George Washington University, Howard University, Haverford College, Virginia State University, Salisbury State University, UMBC, Randolph College, Long Island University, Catholic University and Goucher College.
"It's not every day that head coaches from colleges like Harvard, Naval Academy and Haverford come to our area's doorstep,” said Kevin Dowdell, General Manager at the TennisPlex. “It's exciting to see junior players with great futures ahead of them learn how to become the best possible college tennis prospect. Along the way, they also learned how to leverage activities like tennis to get into the school of their choice and many other valuable insights. The process these days can feel confusing, so we try to demystify it."
Kim Penn, the Event Manager, said, "Most of the players came to learn about the college tennis recruiting process in the panels and to play in front of the attending college coaches. And, based on our survey results, their expectations were exceeded."
