Storms Saturate Area, Flood Roads

June 28, 2015

A line of storms powered through the Germantown area on Saturday afternoon triggering Flash Flood Watches and Warnings throughout Montgomery County.

At 8:00 pm the National Weather Service issued another Areal Flood Warning until 10:15 pm. “Closed road and high standing water due to flooding still remain around the area. Several streams are still out of their banks. Be very careful driving, especially as night falls and it becomes very hard to see flooded areas,” the NWS said in the warning.

Earlier Saturday, storms dropped more than 3 inches in the Germantown area according to the Weatherbug station at Northwest High School.

The rain came down in too fast for gutters and turned street into rivers. Then National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for the Germantown area and a Flood Warning for Montgomery County especially for areas in the Seneca Creek basin and areas of Damascus to Laytonsville along Rt. 108.

The rain swelled streams and lakes. Gunners Lake in swelled well beyond its usual banks to cover many portions of the walking path around the lake and covering the fishing dock.

Seneca Creek flooded over Riffle Ford Road at one point, swelling up as higher than the Riffle Ford Road overpass, sending sticks, and debris into the bridge.
