Montgomery County invites the public to the County’s 19th Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 19, at 6:30 pm, at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown.

This year’s celebration will include the presentation of the Legend Awards to three African American legends who have dedicated their lives to service and excellence in their communities. A special presentation will be given by Willie King, former Secretary of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1965, who transcribed “The Letter from a Birmingham Jail” for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Also, last year’s award-winning film “Selma” will also be shown.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its enslaved persons.
