Two structure fires reported within minutes of each other marred the relaxed beauty the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend in the Germantown area.

The first and most extensive fire was reported at roughly 5:32 pm at 22187 Fair Garden Lane in Clarksburg, and less than minutes later a kitchen fire was reported at 13308 Kilmarnock Way in Germantown.

Montgomery County Fire Rescue units arriving at the Fair Garden Lane fire discovered heavy fire upon arrival at the middle-of-the-row townhouse, according MCFRS senior spokesman Pete Piringer. Fire officials quickly requested a second alarm for the Clarksburg fire.

Meanwhile, at Kilmarnock Way, firefighters arrived to find a 3-story garden apartment with a small kitchen fire, which was brought under control and extinguished quickly, according to Piringer. All occupants of the Kilmarnock Way fire were able to escape without injury.

However, in Clarksburg, firefighters continued to battle smoke from the two-alarm fire, which fire officials believe may have originated from discarded smoking materials on the rear deck and spread quickly along the exterior and to the interior areas of the second floor, attic and roof of the four-level townhouse, said Piringer. Montgomery County Fire Rescue had more than 100 firefighters on the scene to keep the fire from spreading to other units of the multi-unit townhouse.

The townhouse unit where the fire started sustained heavy damage estimated at above $450,000 with at least $50,000 in damage to the adjacent unit, according to Piringer. The lone occupant was alerted by the fire alarm and was able to escape the building without injury.
