Two Germantown Schools Will Welcome New Principals Next Year
While students and teachers are preparing for the end of 2014-2015 school year and looking forward to a relaxing summer, school administrators at two Germantown area schools are preparing to welcome new principals.
Roberto Clemente Middle School and Waters Landing Elementary School will have new principals for the 2015-2016 school year. While one post has been filled, the other remains vacate as the school district conducts a search for a replacement.
Earlier this month it was announced that Roberto Clemente Middle School Principal Khadija F. Barkley would be leaving the school to take a new post as Executive Director of The George B. Thomas Sr. Learning Academy Inc., a private company which runs the Saturday School program which is housed in many MCPS high schools.
In a letter to parents Barkley said, “It has been a tremendous honor to serve the Roberto W. Clemente Middle School community over the last six years. The relationships I have formed in our efforts to create an instructional program that meets the needs of such a diverse population have been fulfilling.” Barkley’s last day as RCMS principal will be June 30, 2015.
The school district is conducting a search for Barkley’s replacement, according to a letter sent to parents from Associate Superintendent of Middle Schools Darryl L. Williams. “The principal selection process in MCPS requires input from school staff and community members. As Associate Superintendent of Roberto W. Clemente Middle School, my office will be conducting meetings with stakeholders to collect leadership characteristics that are important for this principal vacancy.”
Williams held a meeting with staff at RCMS yesterday afternoon and parents and guardians last evening, May 19, to review the principal selection process, obtain feedback and answer questions from the community.
Roberto Clemente Middle School is one of the largest middle schools in the district with 1,204 students enrolled this school-year and a school personnel budget of $11.5 million, according to MCPS. Enrollment projections for RCMS for the 2015-2016 school year are 1,297 students, according to school district.
While the Roberto Clemente community searches for a principal, MCPS has already appointed a new principal at Waters Landing Elementary School.
At the May 12 meeting of the Montgomery County Board of Education Srelyne A. Harris was appointed and approved as the new Principal at Waters Landing effective July 1.
Harris is a 13 year employee of MCPS, where she has worked as a teacher, staff development teacher, assistant principal, and most recently as principal intern at Rachel Carson Elementary School in Gaithersburg.
In appointing her, MCPS Interim Superintended Larry Bowers said, “She looks forward to serving and empowering students, staff and families at Waters Landing Elementary School though trusting relationships, positive experiences, and high expectations.”
Waters Landing Elementary currently has an enrollment of 695 students and a school personnel costs budget of $7.0 million, according to MCPS. Enrollment projections for Waters Landing ES for the 2015-2016 school year are 700 students, according to school district.
