Germantown Five Miler Set to Hit the Streets Saturday

May 13, 2015

Runners from all over the county will come to town on Saturday to participate in the Germantown Five-Miler.

This family-friendly event is presented by Montgomery County Road Runners and benefits a local charity - Sports Plus. The race will take place at the Seneca Meadows Corporate Center in Germantown, MD. The Sports Plus 1K Kids Run starts at 8:00 am. The rolling 5 Mile course is IPICO chip timed and the 5 Miler starts at 8:30 am.

The race was started 13 years ago by Danny Talmage, who remains the Race Director for the Germantown Five-Miler, “There were very few upcounty races and no five mile ones,” said Talmage. “I started the race with a local church. Once the church moved to Gaithersburg then the race became a MCRRC club race. Last year nearly 350 participants signed up for the event and over 100 volunteers gave of their time to make it a success.”

The course will run along Seneca Meadow Parkway, Observation Drive, and Germantown Road between Observation and Seneca Meadows Parkway. Residents should expect some lanes of Germantown road to be closed to traffic for some time Saturday morning. The start/finish for the race is near the entrance to the Wegman’s store on Seneca Meadows Parkway.

This year the event will also include a Two-Mile Family Fun Run, in addition to the Two Mile Individual Fun Run.

Residents wishing to participate may still register for the race for $30 up until Friday, May 15. Those registering at packet pick-up time or on race day will be charged $35. Registration for the Sports Plus 1K Kids Run, register online for $10, which includes a tech t-shirt. 1K registration will be $15 at Packet Pickup and $20 on Race Day.    Talmage said the race is still in need a few more volunteers. Those interersted in volunteering can sign up on the club site.

“We have supported Sports Plus over the last few year because of their great work reaching out to kids through sports and helping families understand how to support their children,” said Talmage.

Sports Plus is a Montgomery County Maryland based non-profit organization that offers year-round, uniquely structured, co-ed sports and swimming programs for verbal children and young adults between the ages of 5 and 17 able to follow simple directions with mild to moderate autistic spectrum disorders, ADD/ADHD and other developmental disabilities. These children have capabilities that fit between existing mainstream sports programs and adaptive sports programs. The organization offers both indoor and outdoor programs that feature innovative techniques, trained coaches with extensive sports and special education experience, the participation of neurotypical siblings and a comfortable, supportive and productive environment for all participants and their parents.
