The Northwest boys lacrosse team came into Thursday night’s first round playoff game with hopes of beating Magruder for the second time this year, but the Colonels had other plans.

Magruder defeated the Jags 10-6 in a hotly contested match. The Jags were able to get early goals from seniors Colin Mandel and Cory Hathaway in the first quarter. However, the Colonels were able to keep pace with two goals of their one in the quarter.

The Jags would get four more goals in the second quarter. Sophomore midfielder Doug Haller would find the back of the net just eight seconds into the quarter. Haller would score again at the 9:29 mark. The Jags would score again less than two minutes later, as Colin Mandel would get his second of the game to give the Jags a 5-3 lead with 7:19 remaining in the half.

Northwest’s Cory Hathaway would get his second goal with 5:58 remain in the half to extend the lead to 6-3. It would be the last goal of the Jags season. Less than a minute later the Colonels would begin a string of seven unanswered goals. While the Jags took a 6-5 lead into halftime, there was no comfort in the lead.

Penalties would hurt the Jags in the second half of the game. The Jags would take seven penalties, created extended periods of play in which they would be a man-down. Magruder would capitalize.

The Colonels were led by sophomore midfielder Jimmy Hasemann’s five goals, while junior Ryan Martindell had four goals in the game, and senior Logan Refosco scored once.

The loss eliminated the Jags from the playoffs and ended their season. Northwest finished the season at 6-7, in Head Coach Jon Kravitz's first season. The team improved on last season's record of 3-7.
