For the second year in a row the Seneca Valley girls lacrosse team was sent home from the playoffs by the girls from Watkins Mill, but the 2015 Seneca Valley team did not go without a fight.

In a game that rescheduled from Wednesday night due to a torrential rainstorm, the 2-10 Screaming Eagles travelled up Germantown Road a few miles to Watkins Mill High School to face the 6-6 Wolverines on Thursday afternoon.

Watkins Mill jumped out to an early lead as the Wolverines threw four goals on the board, including the 100th career goal from Watkins Mill’s Lilly Schlosser. She would finish with six goals on the day. Seneca Valley had trouble finding the back of the net in the first half, managing only two goals, one from freshman Alyssa Delgadillo, and another from senior Amanda Singer. The Lady Wolverines took a 9-2 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Seneca Valley came out and took the play to the Wolverines, outscoring Watkins Mill 6-3 in the first 12 minutes of the second half. In that stretch, the Eagles got goals more three goals from Amanda Singer, and one each from freshman Lexi Opdenaker, seniors Carly Socha and Alexis Davis.

“We were down 9-2 at half-time and outscored them 10-6 in the second half,” said Seneca Valley Head Coach Molly Gillespie, “but it wasn’t enough. I am really proud of the way they played in the second half.”

After Amanda Singer scored her fourth goal with 8:14 seconds left in the game, Seneca Valley still trailed 13-9.

With 5:43 second remaining in her high school lacrosse career, Seneca Valley senior midfielder Carly Socha would power through a double-team, and chop a fierce shot past Watkins Mill’s goalkeeper to cut the lead to 13-10. Socha would end the game with two goals and one assist.

Seneca Valley would continue to pressure the Wolverines. Alyssa Delgadillo would force a turnover in the Seneca defensive zone. She would carry the ball through the midfield and around the Watkins Mill goal, flick a pass to an Alexis Davis who would shot over a defender to cut the deficit to just two goals, 13-11 with just 4:06 remaining in the game. Davis ended the game with two goals and four assists.

One minute and ten seconds later, Amanda Singer would storm through the Watkins Mill midfield and into the attack-zone. As she was shooting, an official called an infraction on Watkins Mill, giving Singer what amounted to a penalty shot ten-feet from the goal. Singer’s aim would be true as she zinged it past the goalie to bring the Eagles to within one point, 13-12 with 3:35 remaining in the playoff. Singer ended the game with six goals.

The Wolverines were rattled but were able to mount some offense in the final minutes and M. White was able to work free and stroke two shots that found the back of the Seneca Valley goal to extend the lead and give the girls from Watkins Mill a bit of breathing room, 15-12. She would finish with five goals.

After the game Coach Gillespie said, “I am very proud we played today.” She also hopeful for next season while lamenting the loss of key seniors. “Unfortunately we are losing our top three scorers – our three midfielders. But we have a really young team, we are only losing six kids. We should be real strong next season. We have a lot of girls on JV that I would have liked to bring up, but I, unfortunately didn’t have enough jerseys for them. We are looking really strong. Next year we will have a junior heavy team. Once again we won’t have a ton of seniors, but I am really looking forward to working with the younger girls and getting them out there.”

Watkins Mill will face Damascus on Saturday in the second round of the playoffs.
