Students involved in sports and clubs at Germanton high schools and middle schools, and all Montgomery County public schools, will have to pay more in extracurricular activity fees next year.

The Board of Education voted unanimously at Monday’s meeting to increase the Extracurricular Activity Fee from $30 per year to $32.50 per year.

The Extracurricular Activity fee which supports adult-supervised extracurricular activities, such as sports and clubs, for middle and high school students. Students who pay the annual ECA fee are entitled to participate in one or more programs during the school year.

“The ECA fees help to offset the costs for operating after-school programs and for the transportation costs for activity buses,” said Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers, in a memo recommendation to the Board of Education. The current ECA fee of $30.00 was last increased in Fiscal Year 2008. In FY 2014, more than 24,000 students paid the ECA fee and generated $706,216.00 in revenue to support the programs, according to Bowers.

“Recommendation Effective July 1, 2015, I am recommending a $2.50 increase to the ECA fee, from $30.00 to $32.50 per student. I am not recommending an increase to the reduced ECA fee of $15.00 per student, charged to students whose family income is below $35,000.00 per year,” said Bowers in the memo to the Board of Education.

Bowers projects the increase will produce a revenue increase of $30,466.
