Roberto Clemente Sweeps 2015 Book Wars
They gathered for battle in the media center of Roberto Clemente Middle School. The squads have been preparing for battle for months. With team names like The Gryffindorks, Book Nerds, TALES, Capax Infiniti, and The Last Book Benders, middle school students from four MCPS schools flexed their reading muscles to overcome foes in an all-out book-battle royale -- the second annual Book Wars.
Teams from Roberto Clemente, Robert Frost, Rosa Parks and Rocky Hill middle schools gathered on Friday, April 19 to test their knowledge of the written word against their peers from the other schools. Each school fielded more than one team, some with as many as three teams.
This year Roberto Clemente hosted the competition and swept the top prizes with the Gryffindorks winning the Best Spirit Award and The Bellatrix Lestranges taking home the 2015 Book Wars trophy and the school would get to keep the Book Wars Cup.
Roberto Clemente media specialist Alexis Gerard hosted this year’s competition, which is a question and answer format, in which the teams are asked five rounds of questions based on up ten novels the organizers selected as required reading for the competition.
Book Wars was the brain-child of Rosa Park’s Middle School media specialist Tim Dixon, said Gerard. “Two years ago Tim approached me and a few other middle school media specialists to see if we would be interested in starting an interscholastic competitive reading club with our students, based on the Book Wars program in Howard County public libraries,” said Gerard.
