Roberto Clemente Substitute Teacher Pleads Guilty to Sex Abuse

A former substitute teacher at Roberto Clemente Middle School and many other Montgomery County Public Schools pleaded guilty on Wednesday to sexually abusing students.

Jose Pineda, 50 pleaded guilty to two of 10 counts of sex abuse.

Pineda was arrested by Montgomery County Police on Oct. 14, 2014 after a 12-year-old student at Roberto Clemente Middle School in Germantown accused him of making inappropriate contact with her in September.

In November, Montgomery County Police held a press conference seeking information from students at other MCPS schools where Pineda had worked. Montgomery County Police explained that Pineda’s work history with MCPS reached back to the year 2000, when he was hired as a bus driver. Pineda worked as a bus driver from 2000 until 2003. From 2003 until 2006, he worked for MCPS as a substitute teacher.

It was during this time that the Pineda allegedly abused a girl while working as a substitute teacher at Forest Oak Middle School in 2004. That victim, who is now 24-years-old came forward after the Roberto Clemente incident. Numerous students from other schools had also stepped forward in the subsequent weeks with similar allegations.

His sentencing is set for May 29. Pineda will face up to five years in prison, and because he is not a U.S. citizen, Pineda could also face deportation to Honduras.
