Germantown Mom Gives Birth on I-270

March 26, 2015

Baby Jacob Kenneth Nelson was born at about 3:50 am this morning in the southbound shoulder of I-270, near Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg. The healthy baby boy was delivered by his father Jon Nelson and mother Amanda Nelson, of Germantown, according to MCFRS senior spokesman Pete Piringer.

Mother and baby Jacob were transported to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital by MCFRS EMS personnel. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces, and both he and his mother are doing well.

According to reports in the Washington Post, the Nelsons were home when mother Amanda began to have contractions at about midnight Wednesday night, and after about three hours, the couple decided to call their backup doctor and were told to head to the hospital. Their regular doctor was out of town.

The couple, who have two other children, had known for a few weeks that the baby was breech, and as they drove Amanda felt the urge to push and her water broke. She looked down to see the baby’s foot sticking out of her, according to The Post. At this point, she told her husband to pull over. He did. He got out, and came around to assist his wife while calling 9-1-1.

You can listen to the amazing birth of baby Jacob as it happened through the 911 call, here.

This is the Nelson’s third child but the first, which needed to be delivered while on the way to the hospital.
