Northwest Wins 2nd Straight Boys Indoor Track Championship

Northwest has got back-to-back again. After winning back-to-back state football championships, the Jags have taken their second straight 4A Maryland State Indoor Track title, in a meet that was highlighted by Shyheim Wright’s all-time performance in the 55-meter hurdles.
On Monday, at the Maryland State Championship Meet held at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover the Northwest boys’ team racked up 73 team points to take the top spot.
Northwest junior Shyheim Wright won the State Championship in 55 meter hurdles turning in a 7.27 performance in the finals. The fastest time ever turned in by a Montgomery County runner in the event.
Indeed, Northwest had a number of individual State Championship performances. Senior Diego Zarate is the Maryland State Champion in the boys 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.30, and the boys 1600 meter run with a time 4:22.96.
Northwest senior Aaron Beidleman took first place in the boys high jump with a jump of 6-02.00, while Shyheim Wright came in third place in the event with a jump of 6-00.0.
Other performances of note from Northwest athletes include a third place finish by senior Jalen Walker with a finals time of 35.33 in the boys’ 300 meter dash. Walker also came in fourth place in the boys’ 55 meter dash with a time of 6.46.
The Norwest boys 4x8000 meter relay team came in second with a time of 8:06.61, and the 4x200 meter relay team turned in a fourth place finish with a time of 1:31.11.
Northwest also had a few notable performances from on the girls’ side with junior Leondra Correia earning a third place spot in the girls’ 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.44. The Northwest girls’ 4x800 meter relay team notched a second place finish with a time of 9:44.99. The Northwest girls’ indoor team placed fifth in the state at the meet.
