The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Germantown are for today, Saturday, Feb 21 until 9:00 am Sunday, Feb. 22.
The storm is expected to bring three to six inches of snow and sleet, with ice accumulations of a trace to an inch. The snow is expected to start between 10:00 am and noon. The heaviest snow is expected during the afternoon hours. “Snow will change to sleet and freezing rain toward evening. Precipitation will change to rain with areas of freezing rain late tonight,” said the National Weather Service.
“A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet, and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible,” said the NWS.
Alert Montgomery has issued a warning to residents, “Travel disruptions within the County and region are likely as roads quickly become snow covered and icy. Caution should be used during any travel and please remain alert for ongoing plow/salt operations. Do not approach downed utility wires as they still may be energized. Instead dial 9-1-1 to report the downed wire.”
According to MoCoSnow.com, "The reason it’s hard to estimate how much total snowfall we will get is because of the mix that’s coming after the snow. This will make for a very messy Saturday starting in the early afternoon into Saturday night."
"A light rain is expected on Sunday with high’s in the mid 40’s," said MoCoSnow.com. "High temperatures will be in the upper 20’s on Monday, so if there’s a possibility for a delay or closing."
Due to the expected hazardous weather conditions a number of county organizations have closed or cancelled activitieses.
Montgomery College will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 21.
All school activities and community use activities in schools will occur, as scheduled, until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb 21. All activities in schools are canceled after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Montgomery County Recreation has cancelled all recreation programs, and all recreation facilities are closed.
All Montgomery County Libraries are closed today due to the inclement weather.
