Storm Brings Fresh Coating of Snow; Freezing Drizzle Overnight

By Kevin O’Rourke

A mid-day snow storm did little but bring a fresh coat of snow to the Germantown area. The timing of the storm was perfect as it was too late to create problems for schools at arrival time and ending or over as schools were being dismissed.

However, the potential for freezing drizzle and fog tonight may make the morning commute tricky. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until midnight Wednesday, Jan. 21. While accumulations are only expected to be trace amounts of ice, the NWS expects precipitation to continue overnight into early Thursday morning.

The snow started in Germantown just after 11:00 am Wednesday and came down pretty hard until just after 3:00 pm. The official National Weather Service total for Germantown was 3.5 inches.

The Germantown Pulse Snow Totallers reported totals as high as 3.12 inches near Father Hurley Boulevard and Crystal Rock Drive, and 2.75 inches to the east where Route 355 and Middlebrook Road intersect. The official snowfall total at Germantown Pulse headquarters in Fountain Hills was 2.38 inches.

"We've had very few crashes today,” said Dave Buck, media manger with the Maryland State Highway Administration. “That's a testament to people keeping their speeds down & our crews doing a good job.”

Indeed, in the Germantown area Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service were not heavily taxed with storm related accidents. Aside from a collision at the intersection of Mateny Road and Clopper Road, the roads remained wet but no treacherous.

“Some MDSHA crews will continue to monitor conditions overnight and treat roads as needed,” said Buck.

Montgomery County Highway Services said it began plowing residential streets in northern and western portions of Montgomery County at about 3:00 pm.
