MCFRS Respond to Early Morning Fire

January 19, 2015

By Kevin O’Rourke

Members of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service were called to 11301 Wacomor Drive in Germantown at about 4:30 am on Monday, January 19, according to MFCRS spokesman Pete Piringer.  Firefighters encountered a single-family house with fire in the walls.

Piringer said the family escaped after the children were awoke by the smell of smoke. “They were very lucky that the kids woke up when they did,” said Piringer, who returned to the scene with firefighters from Germantown-Milestone Station 34 Monday afternoon as part of the MCFRS’s “After the Fire” program.  All residents, two adults, four kids and a dog were able to escape the fire without injury. “They were lucky because there were no working smoke alarms in the house.”

The cause of the electrical fire was determined to be accidental in nature, according to Piringer. The home suffered about $10,000 in damage. Members of a restoration and renovation crew were at the home Monday afternoon working to repair damages. Piringer said the family was able to spend the rest of the night in the house.

As part of the “After the Fire” program, firefighters will visit neighborhood home and check smoke alarms and install and replace any that are not functioning.
