Montgomery County Police have arrested three men in connection with an armed robbery which was the result of sneaker sale gone bad.
The incident occurred between 11:10 am and noon on Friday, Jan. 2 on the 11000 block of Honeybear Lane in Germantown.
MCPD have arrested Ja Quil D. Hargrove, 19 of Observation Court in Germantown, Hermes Yangu Mavambu, 19, of Chadburn Place in Montgomery Village, and Aurelio Levon Simmons, 21, of Gaithersburg on armed robbery charges. Simmons and Mavambu are also charged with first-degree assault.
According to Lieutenant Bob Ravida of District 5, the incident began with sneakers being put on sale on a social media website. The victim was selling the shoes and one of the defendants was to purchase the shoes, but when it came time to meet to complete the transaction, the sneakers were stolen instead of sold.
A few days later, on Jan. 2, the victim and a friend were walking on Honeybear Lane when they spot one of the defendants in a car and attempt to confront him about the stolen shoes. Then, according to police, the car the pulls away and quickly returns with more people inside. At this point, the three men jump out and assault the victim. They produce a handgun and pistol-whip the victim in the head, and kick and beat him. The defendants then steal the victim’s iPhone, North Face jacket and the sneakers he was wearing.
According to Ravida, the victim and the defendants all know each other from Watkins Mill High School. The case was investigated by Detective Robert Finkelstein.
