Perspective on Holiday Events From the Not So Distant Past

January 7, 2015

Note: This letter was received in response to the Germantown Pulse editorial posted on Dec. 5 entitled "Once Again Germantown is Left in the Cold."

Happy Holidays to all Germantowners!
I have been a resident of Germantown since November 1981. In the "old days" we celebrated the Christmas tree lighting in front of "the old" Germantown Post Office which at that time was located across the street from Germantown Elementary School on what was then considered to be Germantown Road/Route 118, before a new Germantown Road was built farther up Clopper Road, and the "old Germantown Road" was renamed Liberty Mill Road up to the location of the bridge over the railroad tracks which was converted  from being a pass-over bridge for vehicles to a walk-over pedestrian bridge. At that point, the road was renamed Walter Johnson Road which continues today from the Germantown train station to Wisteria Drive.
The community would sing Christmas Carols and other holiday seasonal songs, church members from the area would also join. Santa would visit on the fire trucks handing out treats and sharing the merriment. I just thought I'd provide a little input from not so very long ago  -- only 34 years ago). It seems to me that the event would take place around December 13.
