Snow Storm May Drop Three Inches on Germantown

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Montgomery County from 4:00 am to 1:00 pm for Tuesday, Jan. 6 and just about every weather outlet is predicting one to two inches.

However, MoCoSnow believes that some northern areas of the county, including Germantown, have the possibility of receiving three inches of snow.

It’s going to be cold and whatever falls will stick. MoCoSnow believes most accumulation will fall between 7:00 am and 9:00 am. This is perfect timing for a delayed school opening for Tuesday morning (and if things get bad enough, maybe even a day off…but that’s not likely).

MoCo Snow’s Final Prediction (unless things change): Two pencils.

Two pencils means a 50 percent chance of a delay, but if pushed to say what was more likely MoCoSnow predicts a two hour delay tomorrow, so…51 percent chance of a delay.

The Maryland State Highway Administration is also preparing for the winter storm that is expected to impact the region early Tuesday. Crews are pre-treating major state roads with salt brine, which prevents the initial bond of snow and ice on the pavement. The snow is forecasted to begin as early as morning rush hour, which makes snow removal very difficult in heavy traffic. Commuters need to make alternate plans, such as delaying travel, to avoid traffic delays.

“SHA is proactively treating major roads today and crews will be out in advance of any precipitation tomorrow morning,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. “We remind would-be drivers to monitor the timing of the storm closely and consider delaying travel if moderate or heavy snow falls during the rush hours. If you are on the road in the storm please do not pass plows and take it slow on ice and snow.”

Additionally, frigid cold temperatures and high winds are forecasted over the next three to four days. Travelers should always have a winter survival kit that includes a blanket, a fully charged cell phone, jumper cables and a shovel and ice scraper.
