Montgomery County Police are investigating the death of a man who was struck by a train overnight in Germantown.
Officers from the MCPD’s Major Crimes Division were called to the vicinity of the Germantown MARC Train Station at 19330 Mateny Hill Road, with reports of a pedestrian who was struck on the tracks by a CSX train about about 1:37 am on Friday, Jan 2.
According to police, the initial investigation has revealed that for unknown reasons, the male victim had been in the area of the tracks when he was struck by the train.
The victim succumbed to his injuries on the scene. Detectives were working to establish the victim’s identity and had not released that information at time of publication.
A CSX spokesperson told NBC4 News, that the striking train had two locomotives and 28 cars, and was carrying a variety of freight. The train had originated in the Brunswick area of Maryland and was making local stops to customers in the area. It is being held during the investigation.
MARC Trains on the Brunswick Line are running 30 to 80 minutes delayed as a result of the police activity on the tracks, according to the Maryland MTA website. Metro will honor MARC tickets, according to the MTA. Earlier in the morning, MARC trains were being held, but are currently running, but delayed.
