Clemente Middle Schoolers Experiment with DNA


Students from Roberto Clemente Middle School in Germantown were among the 500 students to learn about exciting career opportunities in science and medicine during the sixth annual Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day. The event was held last Tuesday, Oct. 21 at at Johns Hopkins University’s Montgomery County campus

Students from Roberto Clemente and Earle B. Wood middle schools spent the day participating in various science activities, including interacting with a robotic arm, experimenting with DNA and learning how it is used in forensics, and engaging in a clinical trial to determine the best vaccine or drug to use against a “zombie” virus. In addition to the hands-on activities, students had an opportunity to spend time in a laboratory learning about what scientists do each day.

The event was sponsored by Johns Hopkins University’s Montgomery County campus, the National Center for Translational Sciences (NCATS), Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and the Universities at Shady Grove with the support of more than 20 local private companies, universities, healthcare organizations and research centers.
