Hornets Swarm Eagles 46-13, Seneca's Playoff Chances Grow Slim
By Kevin O’Rourke
So much was on the line for the Seneca Valley High School Screamin’ Eagles going into Friday night’s game against an unbeaten Damascus Swarmin’ Hornets team. Seneca Valley needed to win Friday to solidify their spot in the state Division 3A Playoffs, now even if they win out the rest of their games and finish the season 8-2, it will take a number small miracles for the Eagles to play in the post-season.
Seneca Valley played well, but ran into the Hornets’ buzzsaw and lost 46-13. The Eagles fell into a 7-0 hole early on a misfired pass from Zack Robinson which ended in a 10-yard Ari Cacopardo interception for touchdown on the first series.
The Screamin’ Eagle’s got right back in it on a 67-yard Adrian Feliz-Platt touchdown run, however the extra point was no good and Damascus still lead 7-6. Feliz-Platt would finish with another 100-plus game and putting him close to 1,000 yards for the season. He would score again in the second quarter but after his first long run, the Hornet defense managed to effectively contain the sophomore who had to fight and struggle for every yard.
Damascus would come right back, driving the ball down to the Seneca Valley 11-yard line, and Jake Funk would scamper in to the end zone to put the Hornets up 13-6 with 7:37 remaining in the first.
The Swarmin’ Hornets would not look back. In front of a huge homecoming crowd, Damascus would shut down the Screamin’ Eagles offense and continue to put points on the board. A 23-yard field goal by Damascus’ Joe Curry stretched the lead to 10 points.
Damascus would put two more touchdowns on the board in the first half. Jalen Christian would run for one and catch another. The first was 45-yard run with 1:38 remaining in the first, and the second was a 21-yard pass from quarterback Derek Gibson to put the Hornets up 30-6 with 8:19 remaining in the half.
With just under five minutes remaining in the half, Seneca Valley quarterback Zack Robinson put together a nice drive which was capped by a seven-yard pass to Feliz-Platt. His second touchdown of the night which cut the Damascus lead to 30-13.
Before the half ended, Damascus would drive down to the Seneca Valley three-yard line, and Jake Funk would sprint around the outside and score putting the Hornets up 37-13 at halftime.
The Screamin’ Eagles would come of the half focused and ready to climb back into the game forcing a Damascus three-and-out that would set the Eagles offense up with first-and-10 near midfield. However, the possession would end with a Zach Robinson pass being intercepted by Damascus’ Jalen Christian. The Hornets would take over on their own 22-yard line.
The third quarter would see both teams offenses struggle to move the ball with any success. Seneca Valley would turn the ball over again on a fumble giving the Hornets the ball on the Eagles 41 yard-line. A Jake Funk run would move the ball inside the Eagle 10 yard line.
However, Seneca Valley defense would hold and Damascus would turn the ball over on downs. But an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty would move the ball inside the one yard line, giving Seneca Valley would have first-and-10 from their own one-foot line. A bad snap to Zack Robinson in the shotgun would result in a Seneca Valley safety. Damascus gets two points and the ball back, they lead 39-13.
The scoring would end on a Damascus 10 yard pitch for touchdown by Markus Vinson giving the Hornets the 46-13 win, and extending their record to 8-0 for the season. Seneca Valley will drop to 6-2 and need lots of help from unlikely sources to get into the post-season this year.
