Jags Paste Patriots 57-0

October 17, 2014

By Kevin O’Rourke

It felt like it was over almost before it started. Northwest hung 21 points on Wootton before the Jags had run four offensive plays.

The 4-2 Wootton Patriots hoped to remain competitive with the 6-0 Jaguars. Wootton won the coin toss and elected to receive. On the second play from scrimmage Wootton quarterback Sam Ellis dropped back to pass, Northwest sophomore Sam Pagella jumped in front of the pass but saw the ball slip through his hands, and land in the hands of Northwest junior Davino Frazer who was able to grab the tipped ball and run it 43 yards to the end zone giving the Jaguars a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game.

After the defensive touchdown by the Jags, it seemed the Patriots could not settle down. Their following possession was penalty filled forcing a punt on fourth-and-20, which gave the potent Northwest offense the ball at midfield.

Northwest wasted no time, as junior quarterback Mark Pierce hooked up with senior wide receiver, Brandon Williams for a 43 yard touchdown strike. Northwest lead 14-0 with 7:45 remaining in the first quarter.

A Wootton fumble on the ensuing kickoff was recovered by Northwest, setting up Pierce and company at the Woottton 20 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Pierce hands to senior running back E.J. Lee and he scampers into the end zone. The score is now 21-0 with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter and the Jags have run two offensive plays.

Another penalty filled Wootton offensive series ends with a bad snap on a punt, giving Northwest the ball on the Wootton 34 yard line.

Two E.J. Lee runs and a short Pierce pass later, Northwest would get on the board again as Pierce would once again connect with Brandon Williams over the middle for a seven yard touchdown to extend the lead. Northwest has a 28-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game and Northwest has run just six offensive plays.

The tough Northwest defense made things difficult for Wootton all game. Wootton’s next possession ends with a punt to Northwest senior Jamar Wilson, who returns it 55 yards to pay dirt extending the lead to 34-0 with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter. Northwest missing the extra point was just about the only thing that went wrong for the Jags all night.

The next possession sees Wootton faced with a fourth and 17, and rather than punting, the Patriots attempt to go for it on fourth, the Sam Ellis pass doesn’t connect and Northwest takes over with another short field, on the Wootton 38 yard-line. Once again Pierce would connect for a touchdown, this time to Jamar Wilson, who catches a 40-yard pass to further extend the Jaguar lead to 41-0 with eight minutes remaining in the first half.

On the next possession the Northwest defense would come up huge again as Brandon Williams would intercept another Sam Ellis pass giving Northwest the ball at the Wootton 41 yard-line, setting up E.J. Lee’s second touchdown of the night. Lee would score on a seven yard run to give the Jags a 47-0 lead with another entire half to play.

As the second half began, Northwest would pick up right where they left off, Northwest Shyheim Wright would return the second half kickoff 90 yards to extend the lead to 55-0. The entire second half would be played with a running clock.

E.J. Lee would have a third touchdown, a 50-yard punt return, called back on a penalty in the third quarter.

Later in the third quarter, a Northwest drive would stall out, as the Jags attempted to convert on fourth-and-nine at the Wootton 10 yard-line. The ensuing Wootton offensive series would end with a snap into the end zone and a Northwest safety, to add two points to the Northwest tally and end the scoring at 57-0.

Next week, Northwest will again travel to Clarksburg to take on the 4-2 Coyotes. Clarksburg will play at 0-6, Bethesda-Chevy Chase on Friday night.
