SV Boys Soccer Falls to Defending Champs
By Kevin O’Rourke
The Seneca Valley High School boys varsity soccer team dropped their opening game to defending division champions, on the road at Wheaton High School on Saturday, by a score of 3-4. Both teams battled each other the high heat and humidity of an early September day.
The Screaming Eagles scoring started with junior John Arias at the 39 minute mark of the first half, off an assist by junior Andy Diaz, it would be the only goal of the first half for Seneca Valley. They went into halftime down 3-1.
After halftime, Seneca Valley came back and started scoring early. The second goal came from freshman Francisco Granados off a free kick just three minutes into the second half. Senior Christian Diaz put a penalty kick past the Wheaton goal keeper for the third and final Seneca Valley goal of the game.
“It was a hard played game,” said Seneca Valley head coach Hugo Zapata. “Dealing with the intensity of the heat, we were able to come back from two goals down in the first half. Wheaton is stacked with seniors we had to readjust our game plan right before game time due to injuries. Overall, I'm really pleased with the play of the athletes. We are going to make some adjustments for next game.
Seneca Valley boys soccer will play home against Clarksburg at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 10 and Sherwood at home on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2:30 pm. “Our next game is against Clarksburg they always have a strong squad but we hope to have all our players healthy and ready for game time,” said Zapata.
