NW Girls Soccer Earns First Win in Penalty Kicks

September 8, 2014

By Kevin O’Rourke

The Lady Jaguars soccer team opened their season at the Linganore High School Soccer Tournament. Due to weather the tournament was shortened and the Lady Jags only played one game, but their first game was chock full of excitement as they beat Eastern Technical High School in penalty kicks.

Northwest was forced to come from behind in the heat against the 2A regional finalist Eastern Tech Mavericks. The Lady Jags were down 1-0, when freshman Leanna Choo recorded the first goal of her high school career off an assist by sophomore Sydney Glad to force the game to be decided by penalty kicks.

During the shoot-out, the Lady Jags converted four attempts to win the shoot-out 4-3, with goals from sophomores Emmy Adbullah and Sam Sekscienski, and juniors Hannah Crook and Andrea Rodriguez.

Crook, the starting center midfielder, was also called on to be the penalty-kick specialist goalkeeper. She ensured victory by blocking a Maverick penalty kick.

   In other news…

The Jaguars field hockey team dropped their season opener with a 2-0 loss to Whitman High School on Saturday, Sept. 6 at home.

Northwest field hockey coach Holly Johnson said the team struggled with extreme heat in the first half, but turned it around to play much better in the second of the game. “The first goal was an unlucky deflection up and over our goalie’s head,” she said.

The second goal was the result of a penalty stroke awarded to Whitman after the ball struck a Northwest defender on the goal line.

In spite of the loss, Coach Johnson praised junior goal keeper Bridgette Barbour, who was playing goal for the first time in her career. Northwest usual goalie, junior RushVi Majmudar injured her MCL. “Bridgette took one for the team and stepped up to be goalie,” said Johnson. “That was only her third week in goal and first game. She did extremely well making 19 saves. She looked like she had been playing for years.”

“We have a solid team,” said Johnson, “and I think we are going to have a great season, we just are starting off with a little hiccup.” The Lady Jags will play on the road at Sherwood High School on Thursday at 3:30 pm and Springbrook High School on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2:30 pm.

Northwest Volleyball opened their season with a 1-0 win beating Richard Montgomery High School on the road on Friday, Sept 5. They will travel to Magruder High School on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 pm and Walter Johson High School on Friday, Sept. 12 at 4:30 pm.

Northwest Boys Soccer will open their season at home against Churchill High School at home on tonight at 7:00 pm, and will play a road game at Whitman High School at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
