Champs Crush Colonels

By Kevin O’Rourke

The Northwest Jaguars began their championship defense last night, right where they left off last year – with a win. The Jags pounded the Magruder Colonels early and often on their way to a decisive 43-0 victory in front of large and excited home crowd in “The Black Hole” at Norhwest.

The damage was done early.

Clad in their menacing black home jerseys, the Jags scoring started with a Mark Pierce (11) pass to wide receiver Jamar Wilson (1) in the first quarter to put the Jags up 7-0. Northwest’s offense dominated the first half, and really the entire game. The Colonels could not move the ball against the defending champs defense which limited Magruder’s possession time. The Jags would add two more touchdowns in the first half.

Near the end of the first-half, Northwest junior linebacker Caleb Gills (16) blocked a Magruder punt, the ball was picked up by the Jags’ Troy Lefeged (7) who returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. The Jags tacked on two more with a two-point conversion run by EJ Lee (23), to go up 29-0 near the two-minute mark in the first half.

The Colonels defensive troubles continued in the second half as E.J. Lee ripped off a 73-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 36-0.

The Northwest defense was able to stymie the Magruder attack again forcing a punt, which was returned to within the Colonels’ five-yard line by Jamar Wilson. That set up a short run for touchdown by the Jags’ Shyheim Wright (19) to end the scoring.

The Northwest crowd got a scare late in the fourth as a Mark Pierce pass to the end zone was juggled, intercepted and returned to Jaguar territory, before being fumbled and recovered again by Northwest.

Next week, the Jags will travel to Richard Montgomery High School to play the Rockets, who are coming off a 46-33 loss to Rockville on Friday night.
