New MoCo Planning Board Chairman Takes Office

Earlier this week the Montgomery County Planning Board had a leadership change when Casey Anderson was sworn in as the new chairman.

Anderson, 46, of Silver Spring, replaces Françoise Carrier, who did not seek reappointment to another four-year term, was sworn in on Wednesday, Aug. 13. He will lead the five-member board which oversees the Montgomery County Planning Department and the Montgomery County Department of Parks.

Anderson, who has served on the board since June 2011, is an attorney and community activist. Previously, Anderson served on the boards of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, the Citizens League of Montgomery County, and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, and the Committee for Montgomery. He also is a former vice president of the Woodside Civic Association and executive vice chairman of the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board.

He has been called a “strong advocate for growing the county’s urban areas and improving its transit network,” by Dan Reed, a planning and architecture blogger.

In July, Anderson told Montgomery County Media, “Montgomery County is a lot of different things. There is room for all of them. There are the urbanizing areas that are emerging. There is a lot more demand for that sort of lifestyle.” He went on to say, “The vision is to preserve the things that work well while accommodating some of the changes that are emerging that are part of what is going to make it attractive for people to want to come here.”

Anderson holds undergraduate and law degrees from Georgetown University and a graduate degree in journalism from Columbia University.

“Anderson's appointment suggests that the county's ready to embrace its urban areas while preserving the suburban and rural ones, providing a greater variety of community types and transportation choices for an increasingly diverse population,” said Reed in a blog post after the 8-1 vote by the County Council to appoint Anderson as Planning Board Chairman.
