You may have seen the construction cranes towering over the landscape off Middlebrook Road near Observation Drive. For the last eight months or more, crews have been constructing a new hospital in Germantown, on the campus of Montgomery County College.
Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, which is scheduled to open in October, will have a full-service emergency department for seriously ill or injured patients and for those with less serious illness or injury. An adjacent observation unit will be available for patients who require additional monitoring.
In an effort to introduce the new facility to Gremantown area residents, the hospital is hosting a Community Open House from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday, Sept. 21.
The event will include self-guided tours of the new six-story hospital, with employees stationed in key areas to engage with guests, as well as, health screenings offered by Community Health, and free Holy Cross Germantown Hospital Tote bags.
"This is a casual, family-friendly, come-at-your-convenience event,” said Yolanda Gaskins, a spokesperson from Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. “We wanted to offer the community an opportunity to meet some of the staff, participate in health screenings and get familiar with the first new hospital in the county in more than 35 years."
The event will also include family friendly activities for children such as, a scavenger hunt, as well as light snacks and entertainment for local musicians.
According to Gaskins, this brand new facility will be staffed by a team of highly skilled health care professionals who will provide inpatient services, convenient outpatient care and community health programs to adults and children from throughout the region.
All patient rooms in the new hospital will be private and will allow round the clock visiting hours, seven days a week.
The new hospital will feature a full scope of medical services, including special units for cancer care and dialysis services, a 15-bed Intensive Care Unit, and two 30-bed units for all non-intensive care patients equipped with advanced patient monitoring capabilities and a behavioral health unit for psychiatric care.
Inpatient rehabilitation services will also be offered at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, including physical therapy, occupational theory and speech-language pathology.
Surgical care will be available at the hospital across a broad range of specialties. Surgical services will feature a pre-surgery testing department, pre- and post-operative area and post-anesthesia care unit. The service includes full-service operating rooms, as well as procedure rooms for endoscopy and interventional radiology.
“Our comprehensive maternity services will provide outpatient prenatal care to keep women healthy throughout their pregnancies-and an inpatient maternity center staffed by a team of highly-skilled specialists in women and infant care,” said Gaskins. “Labor and delivery rooms, cesarean surgical suites, private postpartum rooms and an eight-bed neonatal care unit will provide sophisticated care centered on the health of mothers and babies.”
Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, which will be the first hospital in the nation located on a community college campus with an educational partnership with Montgomery College to help train the next generation of health care professionals. The hospital, which will serve as the anchor for the Hercules Pinkney Life Sciences Park at Montgomery College, will be a valuable resource for aspiring health care workers and provides students with hands-on learning, state-of-the-art instructional space and exposure to the most advanced medical technology.
The new hospital will be part of Silver Spring-based Holy Cross Health network, which is a not-for-profit, Catholic health system.
