Hot on the heels of an exciting World Cup tournament, this weekend Germantown will become the center of the soccer universe for youth players, as the Maryland SoccerPlex here hosts the 2014 US Youth Soccer National Championships, presented by the National Guard. While there is some great soccer at the Plex almost every weekend, the competition this weekend is among the best of the best in the nation, with potential MLS stars and future U.S. National team members playing for the right to be tops in the nation.

Round Robin play in the tournament for all age divisions concluded yesterday. Following a rest day on Friday, the Under-14 through Under-18 teams will compete in semifinal games on Saturday morning, and the first champions will be crowned Saturday night when Under-13 and Under-19 sides take the field for their National Championship finals.

Saturday’s finals include the Under-19 Girls Championship will pit VSA Heat Blue (Haymarket, VA) against Team Chicago Academy – Bogafogo at 5:45 pm on Field 11 of the Maryland SoccerPlex.

The main event of the weekend is the Under-19 Boys Championship, which will pit Concorde Fire Elite (GA) and PDA Harkes (NJ) as they compete for the James P. McGuire Cup, the oldest and most prestigious trophy in youth sports. The 79th McGuire Cup final kicks off at 8 p.m. on Field 11 of the Maryland SoccerPlex.

The US Youth Soccer National Championships serves as the crown jewel of competitive youth soccer as the nation’s top 88 youth soccer teams, in the Under-13 through Under-19 Boys and Girls brackets, compete for the US Youth Soccer National Championship title.

According to US Youth Soccer, hundreds of college coaches, as well as U.S. Soccer staff, have filled the sidelines to watch some of the best youth soccer players in the United States compete in an intense environment to earn a chance to play for the National Championship title.
